In 1908, the A. J. Reach Company organized a baseball tour of Japan to both increase Japanese interest in the sport and to develop a larger market for its sporting goods. Playing games against collegiate teams, including Waseda and Keio Universities, the Reach All-Americans were the first professional players to compete in Japan.
