At the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, baseball – which was only a demonstration sport – was held in a tournament fashion for the first time in Olympic history. The U.S. team, which had future Major League stars, such as Will Clark, Barry Larkin, and Mark McGwire, advanced to the final game against Japan. Japan beat what was considered the United States’ greatest amateur team, with a score of 6-3.
