The Road to Responsible AI: Highlights from Meridian’s Global Dialogue Dinner

As generative AI continues to advance and evolve, how can AI research labs and think tanks work together to cultivate a responsible future for these new technologies? On Thursday, September 28, 2023, Meridian International Center, in collaboration with OpenAI, convened executives and thought leaders from over 15 D.C.-based think tanks to discuss the latest advancements in the field and their evolving implications on industries and society. At the helm of this intimate dinner discussion was OpenAI’s Chief Technology Officer, Mira Murati, who offered her invaluable expertise and insights into the forefront of AI innovation.

The evening’s discussion, moderated by Meridian Board Chair Fred Hochberg, encompassed a wide spectrum of topics at the intersection of AI and society. Guests had the opportunity to delve into some of the most pressing concerns surrounding the global AI arms race and the rapid development of AI technologies by tech companies around the world. Guests also ventured into the intricate terrain of AI’s potential risks, including the propagation of disinformation and ethical violations that can arise from AI systems, while also exploring the many opportunities that AI presents for industries and society in general. By the end of the discussion, guests had actively explored strategies for responsible AI development and safety, reflecting a shared commitment to shaping a more promising future for this transformative technology.

This program is part of Meridian’s Global Dialogue Dinner series, which brings together individuals from diverse sectors to examine the central policy challenges confronting both the United States and the world in a nonpartisan and neutral setting.
