Global Business Briefing with H.E. Marcos Pontes, Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation

On February 8, 2022, the Meridian Corporate Council partnered with Global Blood Therapeutics to host a virtual conversation with H.E. Marcos Pontes, Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation for a discussion on science and technological innovation in Brazil and the effects of these sectors on private investment and economic infrastructure.

H.E. Marcos Pontes has been the current Minister for the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation in Brazil since January 2019. He also presently serves as United Nations GW Ambassador and World Ambassador for WorldSkills International. Before accepting this Ministry position, Minister Pontes was Chairman for Fundação Astronauta Marcos Pontes, a nonprofit organization created to promote education, science, and technology as social and environmental improvement tools for better quality of life.

Throughout the webinar, Minister Pontes focused on some of the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation’s (MCTIC) major priorities and projects meant to fulfill MCTIC’s mission of producing knowledge, wealth, and improving the quality of life for Brazilians. To do so, Brazil is committed to building more complex systems, advancing materials, and developing innovative solutions to all challenges. Minister Pontes also mentioned how MCTIC is beginning to create centers for applied technologies throughout the country to reach and network with more people.

Towards the end of the conversation, questions about what Brazil is doing to produce a green hydrogen market and how the country is strengthening their healthcare quality and access, especially regarding vaccinations, was also covered.
