In 2011, former Baltimore Oriole Cal Ripken Jr. led a U.S. Department of State exchange program for sixteen teenagers and four coaches from Japan. The group participated in clinics at Ripken’s baseball academy and at the Orioles’ stadium, Camden Yards. That fall, Ripken and his former teammate Brady Anderson served as sports diplomats during a one-week trip to Japan. The two visited Tokyo, Takarazuka, Kyoto, and Ofunato, which was still recovering from the devastating Tōhoku earthquake.
