Betsy Purves

Director, Institutional Advancement @ Meridian

With 15 years of experience in non-profit philanthropy, Betsy specializes in encouraging individual giving from annual fund to major gifts to board relations and beyond. Before joining Meridian as Director of Institutional Advancement, she served as Director of External Affairs at the DC Youth Orchestra Program, where she oversaw all facets of institutional advancement including comprehensively managing stakeholder communications. In her first year at DCYOP, she exceeded fundraising targets and doubled board giving; since then, she increased contributed income by at least 14% year on year. Prior to that, Betsy worked at well-known Washington, DC arts institutions including the Phillips Collection and the Shakespeare Theatre Company.

Betsy previously served as co-chair of the AFPDC Arts Affinity Group and continues to play an active role in supporting emerging fundraisers. A classically trained singer and DC native, Betsy lives up 16th Street with her husband, two young children, and agèd black Lab. She holds a BA in History and French from Columbia University and an MA in Medieval Studies from University College London, which isn’t really relevant to her professional life but is an interesting conversation starter at cocktail parties.
