IVLP Impact Award Project: Uzalendo Damia Fellowship (Forever Patriotic)
Uzalendo Damia Fellowship (Forever Patriotic) explored the role of youth in elections. This project provided training to broaden political conversations in local communities. The approach went beyond political education towards practical politics, where youth were immersed in conversations around democratic values and political pluralism. Through this democracy incubation hub, the youth had a platform where they could learn about their constitutional rights and democratic responsibilities. The project aspired to transform youth from passive receivers of information into civic actors that will support youth-led movements, sustain local activism and empower active citizens.
The project took place over a two-day workshop. It engaged 25 young activists from three local counties. Additionally, the project engaged activists through a twelve-week online platform. This platform provided structured conversations modeling inclusive political participation. The conversations exposed youth to their roles in elections and democracy in sub-Saharan Africa. This program was piloted in 2021 with the support of John Hopkins University through the Democracy Moves Network. The project had 21 participants from Mombasa County. Uzalendo Daima Fellowship (Forever Patriotic) modeled inclusive political participation, sensitizing participants in tolerance, accountability and issue-based political conversations. The project successfully increased the number of youth voters in the 2022 Kenyan elections and expanded the workshop ideas to different parts of Kenya.
