IVLP Impact Award Project: Mother-Daughter STEAM Camp Project

Anantya's project empowered and encouraged young girls' interest in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education by equipping mothers with the knowledge and confidence to support their daughters' learning journey. The project consisted of several key activities to achieve its goals. Firstly, there were two dedicated camp classes for daughters, where 27 girls aged 7-12 engaged in fun and captivating STEAM topics such as coding, creating online games, science and art. These classes ignited the girls' passion for STEAM subjects and fostered their curiosity and creativity. Secondly, there were two camp classes for the 27 mothers focusing on essential topics like digital literacy, creative skills, tech for daily life and tech for business. These classes equipped mothers with the necessary understanding and confidence to actively support their daughters' interest in STEAM and create a nurturing environment at home. Additionally, the final camp class was a collaborative mother-daughter class on STEAM topics that encouraged bonding and collaboration between mothers and daughters, further reinforcing the support system for girls' STEAM education. According to Anantya’s pre- and post-camp evaluation, the mothers’ confidence levels in introducing their daughters to STEAM rose from 76% to 100% by the program's conclusion. Mothers also reported observing improvements in their daughters' creativity, problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

The project culminated in an online mini–STEAM Fair, which showcased the collaborative work of mother-daughter pairs. This Future Ready Mini STEAM Fair, which was an extension of the camp, inspired girls through role models and broadened their horizons about the potential of STEAM fields for their future. This fair not only celebrated the achievements of the participants but also served as an inclusive platform for the wider mother-child community to explore and appreciate STEAM. Although ultimately 27 mother-daughter pairs were selected from cities across Indonesia, Anantya received 157 applications, which speaks to the relevance e of the program. Other interested individuals had the chance to experience the fair and receive educational content via WhatsApp, extending the project's impact to a broader audience. Anantya also produced five inspirational videos, which highlighted women in STEM fields and shared tips about creativity and how books can inspire girls aged 7-12 to learn more about STEAM.

Anantya was also a panelist for the IVLP Impact Awards Alumni Discussion Series panel on “Youth & STEM” which you can read more about here.
