Masanori Murakami, affectionately known as “Mashi,” was the first Japanese to sign onto a Major League team. From 1964 to 1965, he pitched for the San Francisco Giants as part of an exchange program between MLB and the Nankai Hawks, his home team. Mashi’s short time with the Giants temporarily closed the doors for other Japanese players to join U.S professional teams.
