Throughout the Brooklyn Dodgers’ 1956 tour of Japan, Jackie Robinson and his teammates were invited to tea ceremonies and given traditional gifts. As the first African American to play in the MLB, Robinson is one of the most celebrated and decorated baseball players of all time. The O’Malley family has since enjoyed a longtime friendship with Japan; the Dodgers made a goodwill tour to Japan 10 years later, and participated in a 1993 Friendship Series in Fukuoka.
