It is widely believed that Horace Wilson, an American oyatoi employed by Daigaku Nanko, now the University of Tokyo, introduced baseball to his Japanese students in 1872. Another founder of Japanese baseball, Hiraoka Hiroshi, became an avid Boston Red Sox fan while studying railway technology in Massachusetts. Hiraoka started Japan’s first private baseball team, the Shinbashi Athletic Club, in 1878.
