<p>The Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, is one of the oldest and largest centers for ocean and earth science research in the world. As part of its Capricorn Expedition, scientists studied the Tonga Trench, the second deepest place in the ocean, and measured heat flow on the East Pacific Rise.</p>
