<p>In 1987, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor (right) visited Asia under the auspices of The Asia Foundation. In the Philippines, she was the keynote speaker at the ASEAN Women Judges Conference. During her visit, Justice O’Connor suggested Justice Ameurfina Melencio-Herrera, a senior member of the Supreme Court of the Philippines, form an organization of Philippine women magistrates and judges. One month later, Justice Melencio-Herrera founded the Philippines Women Judges Association to exchange ideas, information, and insights.</p>
