Employment Status:  NON-EXEMPT (eligible for overtime) – this position is essential and may be required to work during an emergency closing

Salary: $20-$30 per hour, commensurate with experience

Summary of Position:

Under the supervision of the Director, Facilities, this role will provide skilled maintenance and minor repairs for plumbing, HVAC, electrical, carpentry, and general maintenance of historic facilities, grounds, and gardens. The position also serves as key player in the set-up, maintenance, breakdown, logistics, and security of events. Ability to work part-time and during weekend shifts (both Saturdays and Sundays) a plus.

This position is located in Washington D.C. and Meridian requires MD, DC, or VA residence for all employees. Effective January 4, 2022, all Meridian staff are required to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, unless a reasonable medical or religious accommodation is approved.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Perform basic household repairs as required – cleaning, change lightbulbs, minor plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry
  • Perform general gardening duties as required – raking, mowing, leaf/snow blowing, pruning, planting, etc.
  • Monitor security and safety of buildings and campus
  • Move tables, chairs, staging, etc. as needed for event and meeting set-ups
  • Monitor events for cleanliness and other needs
  • Strong verbal, written, and spoken communication abilities
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and appearance at all times
  • Ability to follow direction, work independently and with others in a professional manner
  • Must be proactive and anticipatory in nature
  • A positive upbeat demeanor while working in sometimes stressful conditions is essential
  • Responsible for completing all organizational administrative responsibilities in a timely manner and meeting all organizational administrative deadlines
  • Other duties as assigned

Education/Experience

  • 3-5 years of general maintenance experience; experience in events is highly desirable
  • Certifications preferred but not required
  • Apprenticeship in any of the building trades is highly desirable
  • Or any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ability to work in a flexible, team environment
  • Must have basic knowledge of household repair and maintenance
  • Must be able to climb ladders, bend, stoop, crouch and lift up to 75 pounds
  • Must be able to navigate historic building crawlspaces, attics, roofs, and basements
  • Must be able to move tables, chairs, carpets and other furniture and equipment
  • Must be able to work outdoors in sometimes adverse weather conditions
  • Strong inter-cultural communication skills; maturity, cultural sensitivity, and tact suitable for working with individuals from around the world
  • Ability to work flexible hours such as early mornings, late evenings, and weekends as needed; position does not permit static scheduling although advance notice is given as possible
  • Proficiency with smartphones is required; other technology highly desirable
  • Excellent verbal and written command of the English language
  • Conversational Spanish is a plus
