Global Communications Fellowship

Meridian’s Communications Team is responsible for increasing the organization’s brand awareness and positive public perception as Washington, DC’s most established diplomatic and global leadership institution that strengthens U.S. engagement with the world and accelerates collaboration among emerging leaders from around the world through cultural, educational and training programs. Through digital, social and traditional media platforms, the Communications Team develops integrated marketing strategies to spotlight Meridian’s international delegations, mission-driven events and cultural initiatives.

The Communications Fellow will help support Meridian’s marketing initiatives by producing editorial and multimedia content for social, digital and print. The fellow can expect to gain experience in content marketing and branding, social media campaigns, data analytics, database management, press relations, event management, fundraising, non-profit management, as well as business development.


  • Assist with the daily management of social editorial accounts, including content creation, editorial schedule and production timeline, social conversation monitoring and response, and social analytics measurement and evaluation
  • Curate news articles and stories relevant to Meridian’s mission to post on social media platforms and invite conversation with our online community
  • Assist with media relations
  • Create compelling visual and editorial content tailored to each platform to best engage Meridian’s segmented audiences
  • Update, and occasionally generate, new content for website and blog, and promote new content in timely manner on social media
  • Curate news articles and stories relevant to Meridian’s mission to post on social media platforms and invite conversation and interaction with our online community
  • Measure and analyze effective approaches to content marketing efforts, particularly through SEO and analytics audits and evaluation
  • Research keywords and trends for consideration with online and media advertising
  • Track social media interaction and audience growth, and provide regular updates of changes and trends to inform best practices, marketing strategies and other social media campaigns
  • Support live coverage of events, including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, photography, videography
  • Enhance Meridian’s LinkedIn content strategy by scanning content feeds for relevant posts to share, soliciting engagements and guest contributions from influencers in the Meridian network, among other tactics
  • Proofread editorial content, including newsletters, press releases, marketing collateral and other materials
  • Create visually engaging graphics as needed
  • Occasionally edit and produce video content


  • Experience with Google Analytics, various social media platforms, multimedia production, website writing and editing, digital campaigns; creative/graphic design and content monetization is a plus.
  • Ability to identify stories and elements with viral potential
  • Detail-oriented with strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to analyze data and translate into action plans to elevate digital engagement
  • Strong planning and project management skills, with ability to juggle multiple projects simultaneously and ability to deliver fast turnaround on deadline
  • Team-oriented and ability to work independently and in an office setting
  • Flexible and willing to take on tasks outside primary responsibilities
  • Bachelor’s degree (or working towards) in journalism, communications, marketing or related field; expertise in creative writing, visual design, technical writing or information management is a plus.
  • Interest in international affairs and diplomacy is preferred but not required

Preferred Skills:

Basic HTML, WordPress, CMS systems (Salesforce and Meltwater preferred), Google Analytics, Excel, Adobe Creative Cloud (specifically Photoshop, Premiere, InDesign and Illustrator), video editing, copywriting, content presentation and delivery.

Application Details:

Preference will be given to candidates with 29 hours per week with availability January 6, 2020 through August 2020. Fellows are paid on an hourly basis. Start and end dates are negotiable.
