The Joffrey Ballet strikes a pose.

Kabul, 1963

Robert Joffrey wished to begin the Dreams of Glory tour in Afghanistan to honor the country of his father’s birth. The troupe promised to hold a master class for young Afghan ballerinas before leaving Kabul. When they reached the auditorium the next day expecting to encounter a small group of aspiring dancers, they found the hall packed with nearly 500 enthusiastic Afghans.
