The first American expedition
to Afghanistan.

L to R: Louis Dupree, Walter Fairservis, and Henry Hart.
Kabul, 1949

A handful of intrepid young American scholars traveled to Afghanistan after World War II to explore the country’s rich heritage. Fairservis went on to an illustrious career in South Asian archaeology, while Dupree remained in Afghanistan, becoming a world expert in its history and cultures. Henry Hart continues to carry out surveys in the United States. In this photograph, team members pose with the expedition jeep in front of the old
Kabul Hotel (now the elegant Serena Hotel).
