Froelich Rainey, Director of the
University of Pennsylvania Museum,
with camel nomads.

Near Bamian, 1952

Rainey traveled to Afghanistan in search of suitable projects for
the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. He was fascinated by the nomads, describing them as “tough, handsome, and proud.” Three archaeological projects were conducted in this country under his directorship: Rodney Young at Balkh (1953); Carlton Coon at Kara Kamar Cave (1954); and
George Dales at Nad-i Ali (1968-1971).
