Meridian International Center produces the International Children’s Festival every May as an educational fun-fair that brings together the DC community and the diplomatic corps of Washington, D.C., as embassies host booths representing their country and culture. The day also features vibrant music and dance performances from around the world! This year, Meridian is proud to partner with Cultural Tourism DC for the 4th Annual International Children’s Festival, which is a highlighted event for CTDC’s Passport DC program for the month of May!
Facilitated by Meridian’s long-standing service to the local diplomatic community, embassies create exciting, interactive displays, crafts, and other interactive activities highlighting their country’s rich cultural heritage. These booths introduce children and their families to world geography – engaging children of all ages to learn about the world and the importance of global citizenship.
Person-to-person interaction makes this event truly unique as it facilitates the connection between international diplomats and DC residents. In the 2009 Festival, over 1000 attendees crossed Meridian’s threshold to make crepes (France), paint Kente cloth (Ghana) and create origami (Japan) as they moved from country to country making their way ‘around the world.’ Furthermore, embassy representatives and international members of the community are present to answer questions and tell their stories as they share their colorful cultures. Festival participants not only learn from the amazing displays and activities, but also by talking and relating with people from around the world.
Participating Embassies: Argentina, Australia, Bahamas, Bahrain, Brazil, China, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Fiji, France, Ghana, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Liechtenstein, Mexico, Senegal, Switzerland, Turkey, United Nations, and Zambia.
Participating Performance Groups: A.H. Dance Company, Batala Percussion Band, Paul Public Charter School, The O’Neill-James School of Irish Dance, Kofi Dennis and the Three Dennis Sisters, Raqs Jameel, Nomad Dancers, HoraDC, Halau O ’Aulani, Balaji Music Academy, Fairfax Chinese Dance Troupe, Swiss Alphorn, Escuela Argentina, Bolivian Dance Group, and the Washington DC Turkish Folkdance Troupe.
Bring the child in your life to the International Children’s Festival and ‘travel’ around the world without leaving DC!
