Message from the U.S. Department of State

On behalf of the United States Government, I am delighted to extend my warm greetings to all those attending Meridian International Center’s exhibit, CHINA Town: Contemporary Ceramic Painting from Jingdezhen.

The United States is a cultural crossroads, a center for the preservation of artistic traditions from around the world, and a place where artists look for inspiration in the past while forging new and exciting paths forward. China shares this legacy of artistic innovation and reverence of the past. I am heartened to know this exhibit will allow the American public to see firsthand how Chinese artists are preserving an ancient art form while infusing it with new life.

As a part of the U.S.-China Consultation on People-to-People Exchange, CHINA Town: Contemporary Ceramic Painting from Jingdezhen is the result of a partnership between Meridian International Center and the China International Culture Association. By experiencing the artistic achievements of another country, we gain a deeper understanding of its culture and national character, an experience that helps form an essential cornerstone of our diplomatic relationship. I thank the Chinese Ministry of Culture for its efforts in creating this exhibition and applaud Meridian’s long-standing work in forging cultural connections between the people of the United States and the People’s Republic of China.

As you peruse this stunning collection of painted porcelain works, you are becoming an active participant in the grand tradition of mutual respect and cultural exchange shared between the people and governments of the United States and China. Please know you have my best wishes for an enjoyable experience.
