Spring Fellowship, International Visitor Leadership Program

Meridian International Center
Professional Exchanges Division
Spring 2018
International Visitor Leadership Program Fellowship

Meridian International Center’s Professional Exchanges Division (PED) offers fellowships to qualified undergraduates interested in international relations and cultural exchange. The fellowship is best-suited for sophomores and juniors, though freshmen and seniors may be considered.

The Spring 2018 fellow will work closely with PED staff to administer the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) – the U.S. Department of State’s premier professional exchange. Through short-term visits to the United States, current and emerging foreign leaders in a variety of fields experience the U.S. firsthand and cultivate lasting relationships with their American counterparts.

The IVLP fellow will provide logistical support to facilitate the program. Responsibilities include creating and assembling welcome materials for participants in State Department exchanges, researching cultural activities for international visitors in Washington D.C., and assisting staff with program book writing. Additionally, the fellow will research country-specific issues to create one-pager briefing memos for staff, write blog articles for publication on Meridian’s blog The Lead, conduct a long-term research project on a local D.C. issue, and attend meetings with IVLP participants across D.C.

The spring fellowship is 16 hours per week and is paid hourly. Start and end dates are flexible, though ideal candidates would begin in late January or early February.

The ideal applicants will demonstrate:

  • Strong interest in cultural exchange, American studies, public diplomacy, international education, or international relations
  • Experience with cultural exchange on or off campus
  • Proven initiative and strong interpersonal skills, especially in a professional setting
  • Superb organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong writing skills

Applicants are required to:

  • Be available on either Thursday or Friday
  • Commit at least 16 hours per week to the fellowship
  • Be fluent in verbal and written English
  • Be authorized to work in the United States

The deadline to apply for the fellowship is January 13th, 2018. Interested candidates should send a resume and cover letter to Mr. Andrew Caughey, the Professional Exchanges Division Fellowship Coordinator, at acaughey@meridian.org.

Only applications including both a resume and a cover letter will be considered. Due to the volume of applications received, only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted or provided an update on the status of their application.
