Senior Accountant

Salary Range: Commensurate with experience
Location: Washington, D.C.
Reports To: Director of Finance

Purpose and Description

Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Senior Accountant will help balance workload and manage operations of the finance department.  With a focus on both transaction processing and customer service, the goal is to assist in providing timely and accurate information to program managers ensuring clear communication and understanding.

Essential Functions

  • Assist Director of Finance in managing the monthly closing process, reviewing staff work and performing grant accounting
  • Perform monthly balance sheet reconciliations, including analysis of investment accounts, fixed assets and depreciation, prepaid expenses, deposits and other general ledger accounts
  • Perform reconciliation of employee credit card charges and other grant related transactions.
  • Review journal entries for payroll and employee benefits; bank deposits and other activities
  • Review accounts payable vouchers and electronic payments
  • Provide customer support to program staff by answering questions regarding charges and other items in project accounts
  • Assist Director of Finance with annual audit, indirect cost negotiation, preparation of Federal form 990, preparation of form 5500, and other periodic responsibilities
  • Support continuous effort to streamline and increase efficiency of processes

Minimum Qualifications

Experience/Education

  • Undergraduate degree in Accounting, Finance or related fields
  • Minimum of 2-4 years of relevant, progressive experience in a non-profit, association, or government agency
  • Experience with Federal grants and regulations required
  • Public accounting experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel required
  • Experience with Microsoft Dynamics SL is preferred
  • Ability to analyze, evaluate and summarize financial records and communicate relevant information to program staff
  • Ability to communicate financial information in terms understandable by non-financial personnel
  • Professional demeanor and ability to interface with all levels of management and staff, with an emphasis on customer service
  • Keen analytical, organizational and problem-solving skills that enable critical thinking
  • Effective and persuasive, oral and written, English communication skills

  • Excellent verbal and written command of the English language
